CLUTCH "BOOK OF BAD DECISIONS" ALBUM REVIEW

This album, feels like Clutch is revisiting the groovier, more experimental sound that defined their 7th album, Robot Hive: Exodus. This album is nowhere near as heavy as Psychic Warfare, but what it lacks in heaviness, it makes up for in creativity. The use of organs, pianos and even a horn section really spice up the tracks. Neil's lyricism is on point, even turning a recipe for crab cakes into a  bluesy delight of a track.

Being their longest album in quite some time, there were bound to be a few tracks that were just okay. Spirit of '76 is a bit more on the okay side but still enjoyed it, and Ghoul Wrangler just felt too experimental for my taste. I found something to like about all the other tracks though.

Highlights of this record for me are the bass-heavy title track "Book of Bad Decisions", the energetic "In Walks Barbarella", the piano driven "Vision Quest", the frantic "Weird Times", the gospel-rock track "Sonic Counselor", and the slow and haunting "Lorelei".

The production on this album goes back and forth from sounding extremely raw like Metallica's St. Anger and live, to sounding finely tuned with atypical guitar and bass tones. The drums sound fantastic throughout unlike St. Anger.

Overall, if Earth Rocker and Psychic Warfare were Blast Tyrant Parts 2 and 3, and you were hoping Book of Bad Decisions would be Part 4, you're out of luck. Instead you'll find an album that takes the Robot Hive: Exodus formula and elevates it with better production, better instrumentation and a more cohesive and deliberate feel.
