GOOD CHARLOTTE AT THE NOVO BY TALIA FARBER

Image
Good Charlotte at the Novo (formerly known as Club Nokia) on October 27th  were nothing short of amazing and nostalgic. I can’t think of a better venue in LA for them to have made a comeback with. I’ve been listening to GC since elementary school years, and I can thank my sister for that. My sister was in high school at the time and she showed me all the emo/punk/alternative bands that paved the way for my music taste. She would pick me up from school and always be playing a mix CD of different bands that I grew to love, including Good Charlotte. The first she showed me from them was “Girls & Boys”, I remember watching the music video on AOL back in the day. I then discovered the whole The Young and The Hopeless album and had my mom buy me the CD. Man, the early 2000’s had some of the best music. Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, The Used, etc. These whole emo revival tours really fill my heart with joy. I’ve been listening to Good Charlotte for 14 years and never got to see them…

MESHUGGAH AT THE NOVO BY TALIA FABER!

Image
Meshuggah at the Novo (formerly known as Club Nokia) in Los Angeles on October 19th were nothing short of heavy as balls. The guys are touring in promotion of their new album that just released on October 7th called The Violent Sleep Of Reason via Nuclear Blast Records. When you see Meshuggah play they don’t ever have a short set, each song of theirs is pretty lengthy. Meshuggah is well known for their guitar style, which is now a popular trend in metal called “djent”. These guys basically started that whole style and are considered gods of metal. They don’t come to America very often as they are a Swedish band, so whenever they come it’s definitely a treat. A Meshuggah show is the greatest place to network with people, they’re all musicians. I ran into Wes Hauch (ex-The Faceless), Justin McKinney (The Faceless/The Zenith Passage), Javier Reyes (Animals as Leaders), Tosin Abasi (Animals as Leaders), and I’m sure there were plenty other cool people there. Everyone loves Meshuggah!

ALBUM REVIEW: ALTER BRIDGE THE LAST HERO! 4 1/2 SKULLS

Image
Alter Bridge has finally released their long awaited follow up to Fortress, The Last Hero. Where Fortress was a transition in both more worldly lyrics and progressive musicianship, The Last Hero embraces the new direction completely. There is so much musical talent on this album it could fill a years catalog easy.

Fortress saw Alter Bridge steer to a progressive metal sound, but had two major drawbacks. The first being the production was not as stellar as the three albums that preceded it. The guitars were a bit to piercing and distorted to appreciate all the leads and chords put into that record. The biggest issue in production was Brian's bass was too low and mixed in with Scott's bass drum kick. Fortress had some of Brians best bass licks and if you listen closely you can hear them, but at first listen it was travesty. The second issue is, thought they are my favorite band, Fortress felt a bit rushed, not as well constructed as the albums before it. The Last Hero lacks those…

KNOTFEST 2016

Image
Knotfest 2016 was a dusty, windy, hot, but fantastic day and night. I started off with getting dirt and sunscreen in my eyes that I had to go to the medic before even seeing any bands to get my eyes rinsed, so that was metal as fu*k? The weather was absolutely horrible, being it was late September it was just too hot still. Last year Knotfest was held in mid October, the weather being so much cooler around that time. Whatever weather happened that day no one would want to miss out on this festival and have a once in a lifetime chance to see Slipknot perform Iowa in entirety.

Motionless in White were the first to open the main stage and the first band I saw that day. Here began the lag. I'm not too sure what happened, but MIW went on stage an hour later than they should have. I saw Slayer's amps and drums still on the stage when it should have been MIW's. I think there were technical difficulties or backlining problems. Anyways, Motionless in White were definitely the odd b…
