SAM RIGGS AT THE PARISH IN AUSTIN - PHOTO GALLERY BY MICHAEL MULLENIX

Despite what people may think, the truth is we don't get a ton of Country out here in Austin.  If you're determined and have your ear to the ground, you can find some shows and the occasional happening at a honkey-tonk, but it is not wall-to-wall like people outside Texas believe.  However, when we do get our Country-fix it is of course top caliber, especially our Hometown Heroes.

This weekend the Parish club on 6th St hosted the Homecoming show of rising country star, Sam Riggs.   Having just released his sophomore album, Breathless, earlier this year, Sam used this night to roll out new hits like Second Hand Smoke, Lucky Ones, Burn Me Down.  What sets Riggs apart from his contemporaries in the genre is the way he blends his more traditional roots with the modern, Rock-infused Country sound.  Strumming away at an acoustic during one of the slow songs is common-place for anyone, but to see Riggs also pull out a Violin for more sentimental numbers like Hold On And Let Go adds a unique element to setlist.  In addition, jamming away on a Banjo for party songs like High On A Country Song and Wake The Dead definitely harken back to a more traditional sound.  As per his tradition, the evening ended on a drum solo performed by Riggs himself to the song Shady Grove.  From start to finish it was captivating, and the Parish was lit up like the biggest festival in town.

Without further ado, I am proud to bring you, SAM RIGGS!!
