UNDEROATH AT SELF HELP FEST 2016 BY TALIA FARBER

Underoath at Self Help Fest 2016 blew everyone's minds. The band broke up in 2013 and was formed in 1997, at the mere age of 15/16 years old. Underoath is a Christian metalcore band based out of Tampa, Florida. To many, this band paved the way for the music that's created and listened to today. Some call this band one of the founding fathers of metalcore. They declared a reunion for Self Help Festival 2016 in late 2015. Even though the band has only been gone for 3 years, people still went nuts. They played in their Only Chasing Safety/Define The Great Line lineup: Spencer Chamberlain, Aaron Gillespie, Grant Brandell, Christopher Dudley, Timothy McTague, and James Smith.

The band came on stage playing Breathing In a New Mentality off of "Lost In the Sound of Seperation". Definitely a way to hype the crowd, but let's be real... Everyone at that festival saw Underoath, they were there for that reunion. Funny enough, it was my first time seeing them as well. They mostly played material off of "Define The Great Line" and "They're Only Chasing Safety". I personally never actually listened to Underoath much before the festival, the only songs I really know are A Boy Brushed Red, which had such a great response. Spencer made everyone sing the intro and then picked things up from there, and everyone was ECSTATIC! Continuing with the songs I know... Reinventing Your Exit, also a great crowd response, and lastly, Writing On The Walls which was the last song they played before ADTR came on. Never seeing them before and hardly listening to them before I really hope to see them coming back permanently soon, they put on a magnificent performance. At one point in the show I had never seen so many lighters in the air. Definitely a great response from a very large amount of people. This was the biggest Self Help Fest that's ever been booked and only in it's third year. You know a festival is good when someone from Kentucky travels to Los Angeles to see Underoath for the first time. I hope to see this wonderful festival grow larger every year.
