DEFTONES LIVE FROM SXSW 2016 - PHOTO GALLERY BY MICHAEL MULLENIX

I have been a Metal-Head for about half my life on this planet, and in all that time one band has always eluded me.  One band was always playing when I was out of town, or tickets were sold out just so I could catch a glimpse of the Hype Hurricane they always engendered.  I am talking about the Deftones.

Ladies and Gentlemen, starting off our SXSW coverage, I have to begin with a recap on the centerpiece of my week-long experience.  At the SXSW Outdoor Stage at Lady Bird Lake, Ray LaMontagne canceled his headlining performance on Thursday, March 17th, and in his place The Deftones took the reigns at the top of the bill.  A packed audience in the park surrounded the stage as these California Metal Veterans launched into Rocket Skates off their 2010 album Diamond Eyes.  The show was an absolute spectacle to behold, as they feverishly tore through hits such as Swerve City, Digital Bath, and Knife Party, all the while with the city skyline behind them.  As mellow as a lot of their tracks can be, the Deftones never fail in providing that intense, borderline manic fervor with songs like Around The Fur, You've Seen The Butcher, and My Own Summer (Shove It).

Few bands can live up to the level that their fans have ever put them on, and this is a band that has been around for 20 years.  I thought, clearly there is no way that they would live up to all the praise of their shows so long ago.  For Deftones to be this energetic, this mesmerizing, and this true to form is inspiring.  Well before they played Change (In The House Of Flies) I was ready to couch them as one of my top 20 bands I've ever seen in my concert-going career.

It is my pleasure to bring you, DEFTONES!
