BILLY IDOL AT STUBBS BBQ 2015 - PHOTO GALLERY BY MICHAEL MULLENIX

An incredible night of Rock N Roll invaded Stubb's BBQ last night when Billy Idol showed up with special guest, Ryn Weaver.  Nestled in the heart of Austin's downtown music scene, Stubb's is the original BBQ and premier music venue in town.  Set outside, seeing Billy Idol in this setting is truly a unique experience that resembles more of a hometown, backyard show than a formal concert.

Starting off was Ryn Weaver, a hard-hitting indie-pop singer from San Diego.  Though her set was pretty bare-bones, there is a lot to enjoy and latch onto; her style had a lot more grit than the general Indie darling you see coming through on tours like these.  Songs like Pierre, The Fool, and Sail On really distinguish this young singer from the pact with a great range and Dynamic stage-presence.  The song she closed on, Octahate, is a truly powerful and slightly haunting hit that is undoubtedly the reason she has become a rising star of festivals like Bonaroo and Coachella.

Closing out the night, Billy Idol took us through a journey of his greatest hits, reaching all the way back to his days as the frontman for Generation X.  Starting off the night with a sampling of his most recent album (and tour namesake) Kings & Queens Of The Underground, he launched into Postcards From The Past and Can't Break Me Down, the night was off to the right tempo as he transitioned into fan-favorites like Cradle Of Love and Flesh For Fantasy.  The unique thing about Idol is that his set seems to have shifts in focus; heavier on the newer stuff at first, then a retro-throwback with Generation X covers of Ready Steady Go and Dancing With Myself, and even a softer and more soulful section in the middle.  The softer side of his set came when he picked up an acoustic guitar and went into Sweet Sixteen and Eyes Without a Face.  After an elongated guitar solo that compartmentalized that section of his act, he came back out to finish off the set with Blue Highway and Rebel Yell.  Idol has enthralled millions for decades now, and as a pre-game show for Austin City Limits, this was the perfect kick-off celebration.  Encouring on White Wedding and Mony Mony, The night was brought to a bright finish, and the stage is set for the rest of the festival weekend.

It is my pleasure to bring to this site, BILLY IDOL!
